Professional golfers usually play a few practice rounds at the venue before a competition, with the goal of learning the layout, identifying potential hazards, and formulating a plan of action in case they find themselves in a jam.
Players on the PGA Tour should start preparing for tough interviews as soon as possible, given the problematic history of the tour’s planned partnership with the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
On Tuesday night, Bryson DeChambeau, who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in the summer, dove in front of a speeding train on CNN. With the help of an interview with Kaitlan Collins, DeChambeau attempted to clarify Tuesday’s announcement.
According to DeChambeau, “this is the best thing that could ever happen to the game of golf.” “I truly believe the game of golf wins,” he said, “because the fans are going to get what they want and the players are going to experience something a little different, a little new.”
Whether or not that’s accurate, it’s undeniable that LIV and the PIF have more clout and influence than they had on Monday, and that DeChambeau stands to gain as a result.
When Collins pressed DeChambeau on the criticism from 9/11 families and Saudi Arabia’s human rights record in relation to the new venture, the discussion took a decidedly different tone.
They are suspected of providing funds for terrorist organizations, Collins added. They are also blamed for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a contributor to the Washington Post. I’m curious how you feel about that as a source of the money.
Neither DeChambeau’s statement nor his attempt to disassociate himself from global matters came off as particularly confident.
It’s awful what’s happened, he added, but as a golfer, he doesn’t feel qualified to comment. Because we are allies with them, I can state that one of their main goals is to improve as allies.
I won’t get into the politics of it since that’s not my area of expertise. What I can say is that they are making an effort to improve the world and present themselves in a way that hasn’t been done for a while. We’re not perfect, but we’re all working to be better every day.
The LIV Golf pros spent the better part of last summer grappling with the same issues that DeChambeau did. The players on the PGA Tour will now be subject to the same scrutiny. They have time to think of a better response, if they can think of one at all.
