According to a French Connection, Wembanyama is Delighted to Head to The Spurs
Rather than quoting Ice Cube, sincere happiness overflows in Victor Wembanyama‘s voice as he travels to San Antonio.
Even though franchise general manager Brian Wright only alluded to maintaining an open mind during his press conference, the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery and the opportunity to draft Wembanyama, the presumed No. 1 choice. The Spurs have acquired a generational talent once more.
Wembanyama represents the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans in France, where the Spurs have a long history. Former Spur Boris Diaw serves as the team’s president.
Although Tony Parker, one of the best players France has ever produced, played for the Spurs for most of his Hall of Fame career, that is where the two teams have the closest link. Parker shared a photo on Twitter of a young Wembanyama wearing a Parker Spurs shirt as he tweeted about winning the lottery.
Wembanyama should arrive here for a variety of additional reasons. This is a franchise and city accustomed to working with foreign players, not a huge media market where the pressure might feel tenfold greater. Gregg Popovich, one of the best player development coaches the game has ever seen, will teach him the ropes on a club that is not anticipated to contend in its first couple of seasons.
The Spurs have won this one, and Wembanyama had a good day.
