Brooks Koepka got out to a fast start on Sunday for the second consecutive major.
He had a one-stroke lead going into the final round of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. He finished second to victor Jon Rahm at the Masters last month after failing to hold onto his lead.
He claims that day’s blunders taught him something. Will he make it clear today? Or will someone else step forward, like Scottie Scheffler, Victor Hovland, Corey Conners, or Bryson DeChambeau?
On a thrilling Sunday at Oak Hill, keep up with the leaderboard for the final round and all the excitement.
Winning PGA Championship, Brooks Koepka Advances in U.S. Ryder Cup Standings
It’s possible that Brooks Koepka will represent Team USA in this year’s Ryder Cup.
He is now in second place in the U.S. Ryder Cup rankings, 1,537 points ahead of third-place Xander Schauffele, after finishing T-2 at the Masters and winning the PGA Championship. The top six players on the points list automatically qualify after the Tour Championship.
The five-time major champion is still qualified for the four majors even though he switched to LIV Golf last year and is therefore unable to compete in PGA Tour events. For every $1,000 earned in each major, you get two points. Per $1000 spent at a Tour stop, one point is awarded.
Zach Johnson, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain, was asked to evaluate Koepka’s playing after completing his final round at Oak Hill. Koepka, 33, might make the team if he wins on Sunday.
Scores from the PGA Championship’s whole field
Johnson described him as “a rare breed mentally, just able to bring out his best in the most trying of circumstances.”
Then Johnson, who also has six captain’s picks, said he hasn’t given LIV players a chance to make his U.S. team.
Johnson stated, “I believe it’s premature, and quite honestly, irresponsible, to even have any sort of view about that.
Three-time Ryder Cup champion Koepka stated before the PGA that while representing the United States at Marco Simone GC in September is not his main goal, he would be pleased to do so if he is qualified.
Should Koepka compete for the United States in the Ryder Cup?
Koepka declared that it would be amazing to represent the United States. Every time we do it, it’s enjoyable. But my attention is elsewhere. This week, it’s not like my first thinking when I go play. Everything will be taken care of if I take care of my business here.
In addition to Koepka, a number of LIVers improved their standings in the United States. Patrick Reed advanced from 41st to 34th with a T-18, while Bryson DeChambeau rose 64 spots to 35th after finishing T-4.
Scottie Scheffler, Koepka, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, and Patrick Cantlay make up the top six at the moment.
There are still two majors left this year, so anything is possible. But wherever the 12 Americans on the team are in Rome, the objective will be the same: to record Team USA’s first victory abroad in thirty years.
“Tours and other things of that nature don’t interest me. The Ryder Cup is something I want to win, Scheffler stated on Sunday.
“We wish to defeat those European opponents. It’s been quite some time. All I really care about is putting together a group of individuals who will travel there together to bring the Cup back.
