Being one of the NBA‘s best-known players, Stephen Curry has always been seen as a positive role model. He has long been at the forefront of social justice concerns, but only recently did he receive the Social Justice Champion Award.

The honor, named after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, will be given to Stephen Curry, the NBA confirmed. The player who exemplifies the great athlete’s campaign for racial equality, black empowerment, and civil rights receives this honor each year. The civil rights movement has benefited dramatically from Kareem’s ongoing involvement.

The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award went to the Golden State Warriors star for tireless efforts to promote voting rights. Curry has also consistently advocated for food shortages in areas with high poverty levels and backed racial and gender justice in sports.

Curry is a co-chairman of Michelle Obama, the former first lady, and her “When We All Vote” program. He joined other well-known athletes, including Megan Rapinoe and Chris Paul. Janelle Monae, a singer and actress, is also involved. Their primary goal is to increase participation in every election.

Curry is also the brains behind the Underrated brand, which has been giving high school players scholarships. He previously committed $6 million to support Howard University’s historically black men’s and women’s golf programs. Steph’s wife, Ayesha Curry, provides all of the assistance.

As the prizewinner, they receive a $100,000 donation to their chosen charity. Curry selected the Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice at the University of San Francisco.

This non-profit organization, according to its website, “investigates, illuminates, and advances the theory and practice of transformational nonviolence to confront and overcome injustice and systemic violence and contribute to the just resolution of communal conflict.”
