In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, tragedy struck this week when a college baseball player, age 19, passed away on Wednesday from wounds he received when a makeshift dugout fell on him on Monday.
The boy had stars in his eyes, with shinning face and talented game player.
A wooden dugout that he and others were helping to disassemble fell while Angel Mercado-Ocasio, a freshman at Central Penn College who played shortstop and second base, was working at a minor baseball league.
According to ABC27, Mercado-Ocasio reportedly suffered a head injury and had cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being transferred to a nearby hospital. Before passing away, he was hospitalized for two days. Unknown injuries were also sustained by a second unnamed person.
In a statement, Central Penn College president Linda Fedrizzi-Williams said, “Our Central Penn College family is devastated by the loss of Angel.”
We are mourning the tragic loss of one of our own, a bright young athlete who senselessly lost his life while assisting others in enjoying the sport he loved so much. As friends who have become family, we are in deep sorrow.
No words could ever capture our agony.
According to Fox43, the group made an attempt to demolish the wooden dugout after the city informed them that they lacked a permit to erect it on the Harrisburg baseball field. Some of the players, according to head coach Geraldo Diaz, were “playing around” the dugout when he warned them to halt before it fell.
I did everything (whatever) I could to keep him safe, Diaz added. “I was upset with them and urged them to stop acting silly, but children will be children. I continue to feel accountable.
After a site inspection, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department will complete removing the dugouts, according to Matt Maisel, director of communications for the city of Harrisburg, who spoke to Fox.
According to Maisel, no legal action has been taken against the city and no legal action will be taken against the coach or the players.
In 17 games for Central Penn, Mercado-Ocasio recorded a.167 batting average with 11 hits, two RBIs, and seven stolen bases.
