The Tour didn’t go into detail on Monahan’s condition or state of health.
The announcement of the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, a surprise move made in response to the PGA Tour’s condemnation of the dissident tour supported by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, comes a week after the PGA Tour made that announcement.
The 53-year-old Monahan managed the negotiations that took place behind closed doors and weren’t disclosed to PGA Tour players prior to the merger’s official announcement.
Since then, he has come in for harsh criticism from PGA Tour athletes.
LIV Golf has received criticism for numerous times for attempting to whitewash Saudi Arabia’s extensive history of human rights violations.
While players like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and others joined the league in order to receive substantial salaries, some athletes are said to have declined nine-figure offers in order to stay on the PGA Tour and avoid being connected with LIV Golf.
Now that the offers are off the table, they are associated with LIV Golf. Since 2017, Monahan has held the position of PGA Tour commissioner. When he will resume his job is unknown.
