At the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, Rory McIlroy carded his first ace of the PGA Tour season, on Thursday.
A five-iron was used to make the ace on the par-3 eighth hole, which is 214 yards away. With back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes due to shoddy putting, McIlroy had been +1 through seven holes before that stroke.
This placed him six strokes behind the lead held by Keegan Bradley through the first round, as he followed that shot up with a birdie on the ninth hole. In all four of his previous outings at the Travelers Championship, McIlroy has placed in the top 20. He has, however, never placed higher than tied for 11th.
McIlroy entered this week’s competition after finishing second in the 2023 U.S. Open in Los Angeles. He came in one shot behind Wyndham Clark, the tournament’s first major champion.
McIlroy had a strong showing in that competition but has yet to claim a major title since winning the PGA Championship and the British Open in 2014.
