Before Game 5 against the Denver Nuggets, with the Miami Heat trailing the series 3-1, the guard’s status was upgraded to doubtful. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, he is expected to put on a suit and try to make a comeback.
Even though Herro will be wearing a uniform once more tonight, it’s still being determined whether he will play any meaningful minutes or even be able to.
The 23-year-old’s third and fourth metacarpals were repaired during surgery eight weeks ago on his fractured right hand. On April 16, he suffered the injury while diving for a lost ball in Game 1 of the Miami Heat‘s first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks. Even though he was hurt, he made a 3-pointer before sprinting to the locker room.
After the treatment, it was anticipated that he would be out for at least six weeks, which meant that, barring a spectacular Heat run, his season was likely finished.
The No. 8 seeded club overcame the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals and outlasted the Boston Celtics in the finals. Herro’s probable return remained a constant concern throughout it all.
The anticipation around Herro’s comeback is justified. He is the Heat‘s third-best scorer after Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. Before the injury, he scored 20.1 points a game and shot 43.9% from the field.
The Sixth Man of the Year for 2022 may be retrieved, although this is uncertain. Herro told ESPN’s Ros Gold-Onwude before the Heat’s victory in Game 2 that he
“experiences both soreness and swelling in the right hand after the shooting, and he can feel the soreness when he’s making a ‘follow through’ shooting motion.”
According to Gold-Onwude, he also indicated a “consideration” for not wanting to interfere with the team’s flow.
The Heat had to take action to maintain their chances of winning the title as they faced elimination and the unavoidable two-person combination of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. Miami took the decision that was getting more and more improbable, and Ball Arena will decide whether it was successful Monday night.
