On Monday, Aryna Sabalenka ended Mirra Andreeva’s breakthrough week by easily defeating the 16-year-old to progress to the Madrid Open Quarterfinals.

The world No. 2 won 6-3, 6-1, and set up a clash with Mayar Sherif by demonstrating her better stroke power and champion’s experience.

The loss ends Andreeva’s 16-match undefeated streak as a professional. The Russian had emerged as the tournament’s standout after defeating Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette, 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, and former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez on the way to the championship match.

As the youngest player to advance past the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event, Andreeva made history on her 16th birthday when she defeated world No. 17, Linette.

Sabalenka, the winner of the Australian Open, saved two break points from Andreeva to take a 3-1 lead in the first set. She capitalized on a double fault to go up 3-2, setting up a commanding first set.

The following stages were devoid of errors and presented Andreeva with few chances to gain momentum as Sabalenka sprinted to her most recent victory.

Egypt’s Sherif, who defeated Elise Mertens in a match over three hours that resulted in a score of 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, is waiting for her in the following round. Sherif is the first representative of her nation to get to a WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

The 26-year-old tennis player made history last year when she entered the top 50, becoming the first Egyptian to do so.
