The Brazilian player lost to lucky loser Daria Snigur 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round on Tuesday after making it to the French Open quarterfinals the previous week.
Lesia Tsurenko, a fellow Ukrainian, had to withdraw from the game due to an injury an hour prior. Therefore Snigur was forced to step in. Snigur, who won the junior Wimbledon title in 2019, was a challenging opponent for Haddad Maia, the second-seeded player.
Seventh-seeded Camila Giorgi defeated Madison Brengle 7-6 (5), 6-2, while third-seeded Magda Linette defeated Olivia Gadecki 6-4, 6-4 to go to the round of 16.
New No. 1 in the UK, Emily Appleton lost against Katie Boulter 6-1, 6-3.
