Casey Thompson Join Tom Herman at Florida Atlantic after Playing QB for Texas & Nebraska in the Past

On Wednesday, the former Longhorn and current Nebraska quarterback revealed to ESPN that he would play his last collegiate season at Florida Atlantic. In his lone season in Lincoln, Thompson spent most of 2022 as Nebraska’s starting quarterback. He still has one season of eligibility left in college.

Once Quinn Ewers arrived in Texas after the 2021 season, Thompson left the state. In 2022, while Nebraska struggled and Scott Frost was fired following an early-season loss to Georgia Southern, Thompson passed for over 2,400 yards and 17 touchdowns.

After Matt Rhule, a former Baylor and Carolina Panthers coach, was hired at the campaign’s close, Nebraska added former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims. He seemed sure to start as the favorite.

Following his announcement that he was departing Nebraska after shoulder surgery in the offseason, Thompson spent less than two weeks in the transfer portal. He was a part of the class of 2018, and Herman lured him to Texas. 

According to Rivals, Thompson, a four-star prospect, was the No. 5 player in Oklahoma that season and the No. 14 dual-threat quarterback in his class.

While Herman was the team’s head coach and Sam Ehlinger was the starting quarterback in 2019 and 2020, Thompson appeared in seven games after redshirting in 2018. After the 2020 campaign, Steve Sarkisian took Herman’s position after being sacked.

After two years of working as an offensive analyst for the Chicago Bears and a TV commentator for CBS Sports Network, Herman accepted his first head coaching position since leaving Texas at Florida Atlantic. 

Thompson’s pledge was secured, while Florida Atlantic and Herman also recruited former Central Michigan quarterback Daniel Richardson via the transfer channel. Over the previous two seasons, Richardson has thrown 39 touchdowns in 25 games.
