Christian McCaffrey Scored 12th Straight Touchdown To Tie 49ers Record

On Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York Giants 30-12 to win their 13th straight regular-season game. Christian McCaffrey scored a touchdown for the 12th straight game, Deebo Samuel snagged one of Brock Purdy’s two touchdown throws, and the 49ers also picked up their 13th straight victory overall.

Third season in a row with a 3-0 start

Early in their home opener, the Niners’ offense wasn’t especially effective. They still managed to go 3-0 because of McCaffrey, big runs by Samuel and George Kittle after catches, and other factors.

NFL NextGen statistics show that the Giants cleaned up Purdy on 33 of his 39 drop backs. Purdy took advantage of this by throwing for 247 of his 310 passing yards on those plays, including the scores to youngster Ronnie Bell and Samuel.

Reaction from Coach Kyle Shanahan

Coach Kyle Shanahan said,

“I thought it was just a huge challenge—one of the bigger ones Brock has been in with a short week to prepare for a scheme like that. There’s not a comfortable play throughout the game. I thought he settled down as the game went on.”

Late in the second quarter, Christian McCaffrey scored on a 4-yard run to make it 17-3 after rushing for 85 yards and adding 34 more yards through reception. With 12 consecutive games in either the regular season or the playoffs featuring a touchdown, it tied Jerry Rice‘s team record and fell three short of the NFL record.
