Dak Prescott In Charge Of Calling Offensive Plays In Cowboys’ Victory

Despite not playing a single preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott was still affected on Saturday.
According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, during the team’s last preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy assigned his starting quarterback the responsibility of calling offensive plays. The Cowboys won 31-16 to go 1-2 in the preseason. Thus, the setup was successful.

This preseason, the Cowboys have chosen to sideline their starters, and that trend continued on Saturday. The Dallas quarterback room was strangely quiet for Will Grier‘s entire game under center. Grier had been the third-string quarterback going into training camp.
It was so strange that Grier received news that he wouldn’t make the squad before the game. Despite being a walking dead man, Grier put on one of the better preseason performances, finishing 29 of 35 for 305 passing yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in addition to 53 running yards and two more scores.
In a deal on Friday, former San Francisco 49ers third-round selection Trey Lance was acquired in return for a fourth-round pick, which led to Grier’s departure. Grier was the Cowboys’ fourth quarterback in a league where clubs typically only carry three quarterbacks because they already had seasoned backup Cooper Rush and starter Dak Prescott on the roster.
