In the wake of a widely criticized first round, the Detroit Lions have secured a spot on the roster of the most improved teams from the 2023 NFL Draft.

Against conventional wisdom regarding positional value, the Lions selected Jahmyr Gibbs, a running back from Alabama, as their No. 12 overall pick.

Had the team not traded down, they might have taken him at No. 6 overall.

The Lions then raised eyebrows again with their No. 18 pick, Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell.

Naturally, the selection of a running back and a linebacker with two top-20 picks was met with criticism. Many wondered what the Lions were thinking.

However, on Day 2 of the draft, the Lions selected Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta, who was perceived to be the best at his position.

Then they traded up to secure safety Brian Branch, a highly regarded defensive back from Alabama.

Despite early adverse reactions to the Lions’ picks, the analytical-minded Pro Football Focus did not view their first-round selections as poorly as others did.

Thus, it was no surprise that the Lions made Sam Monson’s list of most improved teams from the draft.

Monson noted that the Lions took an unconventional approach by prioritizing low-value positions in their draft strategy.

Nevertheless, he pointed out that the Lions significantly improved their team.

Monson praised Gibbs for his elite speed and impressive receiving skills, which will add to the Lions’ already dangerous offense.

Gibbs was also ranked sixth in the draft class for yards per route run, averaging 1.83.

Campbell was touted for his traditional linebacker frame and will likely start immediately.

LaPorta, meanwhile, is a tackle-breaking machine who forced 20 missed tackles on just 58 catches last season.

According to Monson, the branch was one of the best value picks of the draft’s first two days.

He was kept from being spoken of in the same way as Minkah Fitzpatrick due to his average workout numbers.

Hendon Hooker, the Lions’ third-round pick, may not contribute much in the short term, but he is a solid gamble at the game’s most valuable position.

Brodric Martin, the last player in the Lions’ draft who is expected to see significant playing time early on, was also a third-round selection.

Despite initial concerns regarding their first-round selections, the team’s draft class has received positive reviews because of their success in the later rounds.
