The NBA said on Wednesday that San Antonio Spurs player Devonte Graham had received a two-game suspension due to a 2022 DWI conviction.
Police claim that on July 7, 2022, at 3 a.m. near Raleigh, North Carolina, Devonte Graham, who was then a player for the New Orleans Pelicans, was stopped for speeding. He was caught after reportedly exceeding the speed limit by 63 miles per hour (63 mph) in a 40 mph zone. When he arrived at the Wake County Detention Center, he blew a 0.11 BAC (the legal limit is 0.08) on the breathalyzer.
Graham entered a guilty plea in June 2023, and in July, he received a sentence of 21 days in prison, which was later suspended as part of a plea agreement. Graham was given a year of probation instead, with $393 in penalties and costs. The accusation of speeding was also withdrawn.
Between his DWI arrest and suspension, approximately 13 months went by, during which Graham switched teams. The Spurs received him and four other second-round picks in exchange for Josh Richardson from the Pelicans in February.
Graham excelled with the Spurs, averaging 13 points, 2.5 rebounds, and four assists over 20 games (eight starts), in contrast to his second season with the Pelicans, when he struggled. In 14 of those games, he also registered double-digit points.
When the 2023–24 season starts in late October, Graham, 28, will serve the suspension.
