Diana Taurasi Is On The Verge Of Scoring 10,000 Points, A Historic WNBA Milestone
The Phoenix Mercury’s season has been challenging. Despite Brittney Griner’s comeback, one of the top WNBA teams will likely miss the postseason for the first time in more than ten years.
The Phoenix Mercury‘s season has been challenging. Despite Brittney Griner’s comeback, one of the top WNBA teams will likely miss the postseason for the first time in more than ten years.
Griner missed the game as she concentrated on her mental health, and the Mercury dropped to 6-18 after a defeat to the Chicago Sky on Sunday. Diana Taurasi, the second-best player for Phoenix and a star in her own right, did, however, make her injury comeback and provide a solid performance that moved her closer to a new WNBA record.
Taurasi drew closer to the 10,000-point mark with her 24-point performance in Chicago, which would have made her the first player in WNBA history to score in the five digits.
Having held the title since 2017, Taurasi is now the WNBA’s all-time top scorer after 27 seasons. The 41-year-old is currently in her 19th season and is continuing to play substantial minutes (over 28 every night) and score at a high level (14.8 points per game), so it is likely that she will reach the 10,000-point mark sooner rather than later.
Can Diana Taurasi capture a fourth title?
The Mercury still owes Taurasi one season under the terms of her contract, and there is optimism in Phoenix that the team will be able to send Taurasi off with a trip back to the postseason in 2024.
Phoenix will probably have one of the top two selections in the WNBA Draft in the upcoming season, and it may strengthen its core by bringing in a young player of the highest caliber to join Taurasi and Griner, two of the league’s greatest and most respected players.
Taurasi — who already had three championship rings in her illustrious career — has the chance to dance one final time with the WNBA title if she stays healthy and lucks out.
