There are often strange situations throughout the preseason. As in a quarterback donning a linebacker’s uniform.
The NFL has modified the regulations about which uniform numbers players can wear, so you’ll see some defensive lineman wearing single digits and other unusual numbers.
But a quarterback in number 50? That’s not something we’ll get used to.
Teddy Bridgewater, quarterback of the Detroit Lions, signed a contract less than two weeks ago. He had a difficulty when he arrived at camp, which had 90 players instead of the usual 53 in the regular season.
He couldn’t think of a number that made sense to him. Because receivers and other players can now wear 1-19, most quarterback numbers have been claimed.
Bridgewater has worn No. 5 throughout his NFL career, but running back David Montgomery does. Dutch Clark’s No. 7 has been retired, removing another possibility.
The Lions’ roster showed that Nos. 4 and 17 were still available, but Bridgewater went completely off the rails and selected No. 50.
It’s as easy as putting a zero to the end of his favourite number. He began for the Lions in Saturday’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, wearing No. 50.
Why not, it’s preseason
When cuts are made before the regular season, Bridgewater will most likely be assigned a number between 1 and 19.
That’s a good thing, because no matter how loose the NFL’s uniform regulations are, we’ll never get used to seeing a quarterback wear No. 50 under centre.
Teddy Bridgewater
Theodore Edmond Bridgewater Jr. (born November 10, 1992) is a National Football League (NFL) quarterback for the Detroit Lions.
He was born and reared in Miami, Florida, and attended Miami Northwestern High School. Bridgewater went on to play college football at Louisville, where he led the Cardinals to a Sugar Bowl victory over the Florida Gators in 2013.
The Minnesota Vikings selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He led the Vikings to the NFC North division title and Pro Bowl honours in his second season.
Bridgewater and the Vikings, on the other hand, narrowly lost the 2015 Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks. Bridgewater featured in only one game over the next two years after sustaining a major leg injury the following off-season.
Bridgewater, a free agent after the 2017 season, briefly joined the New York Jets during the 2018 season before signing with the New Orleans Saints in 2019.
He started as the Saints’ backup quarterback before taking over as the team’s starter in place of Drew Brees. Following his time with the Saints, he went on to start for the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos for a season each before signing as a backup with the Miami Dolphins in 2022 before joining the Detroit Lions in 2023.
