As wildfires in Canada prompted air quality alerts on Wednesday, a number of sporting events on the East Coast were postponed.
The trend resumed on Thursday when the Washington Nationals’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks was postponed due to rain.
The postponement moves the game to June 22 from its original time of 1:05 p.m. ET.
The Nationals were able to play on Wednesday despite the postponement of games in New York and Philadelphia, including the New York Yankees’ scheduled game against the Chicago White Sox.
They dropped another game to the Diamondbacks, this time by a score of 6-2. We’ll have to put off watching the show’s finale for now.
The air quality in the Washington, DC, area is worse today than it was yesterday. Thursday’s readings prompted the declaration of a “Code Purple” in several locations. With an air quality index between 201 and 300, that’s about as bad as it gets.
Code Red (unhealthy) and Code Maroon (most severe, hazardous) levels have been reported outside of Baltimore.
The New York Giants, meanwhile, have called off their upcoming OTA practice on Thursday. New York City’s Air Quality Index peaked at 484 on Wednesday.
CBS reports that on a scale from 0 to 500, New York metropolis has the worst air quality of any major metropolis in the world.
Shortly after the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and NYC Emergency Management issued a warning, Giants head coach Brian Daboll sent his players home.
The warning stated, “It is strongly recommended that organizations cancel or postpone outdoor events, or move these activities indoors.”
The indoor setting of the Giants’ stadium did not eliminate the danger posed by the poor air quality. On Friday, the team will have another OTA session, and the following week will feature a mandatory minicamp.
Thursday practices have been moved indoors by several teams throughout the league, including the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders.
