The Steelers selected Clark Haggans, a future All-Pro linebacker, in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft out of Colorado State. He signed with the organization a year after Porter, his college teammate. Haggans took over as the team’s starter in 2004 and soon established himself as a cornerstone of the renowned defense.
Haggans accumulated 332 total tackles, 32.5 sacks, 31 tackles for loss, 17 passes defended, 12 forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries throughout eight seasons. During his time in Pittsburgh, the Steelers never finished outside the top 10 in total defense, even though he was never selected for the Pro Bowl.
The pinnacle occurred in 2006 when Haggans sacked Matt Hassel back of the Seattle Seahawks on the first drive of a 21-10 Super Bowl victory.
Haggans joined the Arizona Cardinals after leaving the Steelers in 2008 due to free agency. After spending one season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he made a comeback to the Super Bowl but lost to the Baltimore Ravens, he stayed there for another four seasons, reconnecting with Porter in 2010. He then completed his career there.
