Star basketball prospect Mikey Williams, who has committed to play for Memphis in the next season, was detained on Thursday in Jamul, California, on suspicion of many charges of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Williams, 18, was held on suspicion of five felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune and NBC 7 San Diego.
According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Williams will probably only be charged with one crime.
Williams was detained Thursday afternoon and released just after midnight on Friday morning on a $50,000 bail. There has been no disclosure of information on the alleged event that resulted in the arrest.
There are multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon against Williams, according to police documents. Still, he is likely to face one charge, per San Diego Sheriff’s Department Lt. Gavin Lanning. Williams is accused of violating California penal code Chapter 9, Section 245(a) (2), which involves “any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm.” The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison.

Memphis said in a statement that it was “aware of the situation” and “gathering more information.” According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Williams will return court on April 20.

Williams, a guard with a 6′ 3″ height, is rated No. 31 nationally in the 2023 recruiting class by Rivals. Williams and J.J. Taylor, the No. 60 player in the class and a San Ysidro High School teammate, agreed to play under Penny Hardaway at Memphis.
As members of the highly regarded six-man recruiting class rated No. 3 in the nation behind Kentucky and Duke, the duo committed to Memphis during the November early signing period, the player in the class with the highest rating is Williams.
