In a landmark deal, the Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed quarterback Jalen Hurts to a five-year extension for $255 million, with $179.304 million of that guaranteed, ESPN reported via sources.

With this development, Hurts becomes the highest-paid player in NFL history.

The deal in question is the most significant contract regarding average annual value in NFL history – just short of Deshaun Watson’s $230 million agreement signed with the Cleveland Browns last year, which remains the largest in guaranteed money.

The Eagles also revealed that Hurts’ extension includes a no-trade clause, which is a first for the franchise.

The 24-year-old Hurts had a standout season in 2021, throwing for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns with only six interceptions while rushing for 760 yards and 13 scores.

He was an MVP candidate and led the Eagles to a 14-1 record last season.

Hurts’ growth as a passer was impressive, improving his QBR ranking from 19th to fourth and completion percentage from 26th to 11th. He set a franchise record with 43 total touchdowns, surpassing Donovan McNabb’s record for most in a single season.

His Super Bowl LVII performance was also notable, with 374 total yards and four touchdowns, though the Eagles ultimately lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hurts’ path to stardom was not straightforward, as he was rested during the national championship game at Alabama in favor of Tua Tagovailoa and ultimately lost his starting job to him.

He transferred to Oklahoma for his senior year and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Hurts was included for a struggling Carson Wentz towards the end of the 2020 season and became the full-time starter in 2021 following Wentz’s trade to the Indianapolis Colts.

He has compiled a 23-11 record as a starter for Philadelphia, having missed two games due to a right shoulder strain.
