After earning the American League Rookie of the Year award the previous year, Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners was reportedly in a rut last week.
Rodriguez established an MLB record with 17 hits in four games on Saturday after recording his fourth straight game with four hits. According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, he is only the second player in MLB history to have four consecutive games with four hits, trailing only Milt Stock of the 1925 Brooklyn Robins.
In the Mariners’ 10-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday, Rodriguez batted leadoff and went 4-for-6 with two runs and a stolen base.
With 19 home runs and 27 stolen bases as of Aug. 12, Rodriguez was hitting.256/.319/.433, which is acceptable but much below the expectations, most Mariners fans would have had for a guy who attained prodigy status with an outstanding rookie season at the age of 21.
Julio Rodriguez has improved those stats throughout seven games to.278/.337/.463 with 21 home runs and 33 stolen bases. No hitter in baseball right now is hotter than Rodriguez, who had four hits in each of the three games before that run of four-hit games.
Thanks to their recent hot streak, Seattle has won five in a row, 13 of their last 16, and 22 of 33 second-half games. With a half-game advantage over the Toronto Blue Jays, the 68-55 Mariners occupy the third AL wild-card slot.
