Kings To Sign JaVale McGee, Three-Time NBA Champion
The Kings want to avoid the problem next season entirely.
Before the NBA season of 2023–24, the Kings acquired a 7-foot big man to improve their depth at the position.
On Thursday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Sacramento had agreed to sign three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee.
According to TNT senior NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Kings “had interest” in McGee, who made the story earlier this week after the Dallas Mavericks released the big man on Tuesday. On Thursday, he became an unrestricted free agent, and the Kings quickly signed him, according to reports.
In addition to bringing back Alex Len and Trey Lyles, who played center last season, the Kings also added Nerlens Noel, Neemias Queta, and Skal Labissiere this summer.
Coach Mike Brown wasn’t confident in his backup alternatives at center last year, aside from the starting center and three-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis. The defending NBA Coach of the Year tried out several rotations and tested the waters, but nothing took hold until the campaign’s final weeks.

The Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets are just a few of the eight clubs McGee has played for over his 15-year career. In 863 games during the regular season, he has scored 7.8 points on 57.8% of his shots and pulled down 5.2 rebounds.
McGee will have the chance to participate in something unique in the city where his mother, former WNBA star Pamela McGee, flourished as the Kings look to build on a historic season in which they ended their 17-year playoff drought.
