Jalen Brunson’s transfer to the New York Knicks in the offseason has significantly impacted two franchises.
While the Knicks have benefited from Brunson’s addition, currently sitting at the No. 5 seed and heading to the postseason, his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, is experiencing a slump and is in danger of missing the playoffs, including the Play-in Tournament.
In a recent media interview, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban shed light on the failed negotiations with Brunson last season.
Cuban said that his franchise “never had the opportunity” to re-sign Brunson before the trade deadline, resulting in the player testing free agency and ultimately signing with the Knicks.
Cuban blamed it on the involvement of Brunson’s parents in the negotiations, which led to the breakdown of a deal between the Mavericks and the NBA star.
The Mavs had Brunson’s Bird rights, which would have allowed them to offer a five-year deal, but Brunson eventually signed a four-year $104 million contract with the Knicks.
The NBA investigated and rescinded the Knicks’ 2025 second-round pick for violating league rules on free-agency discussions.
The Mavericks, currently the No. 11 seed with a 37-42 record, are a half-game behind the final spot for the play-in.
