Pete Alonso "Must Sign" Long-Term Deal With Mets; Darryl Strawberry

Mets 1B Pete Alonso may need to go on the disabled list after getting struck by a pitch in the wrist.
Pete Alonso, the New York Mets’ first baseman, is set to spend the 2023 season on the disabled list with a wrist injury, as reported by MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.

Charlie Morton’s 96 mph fastball hit Alonso in the first inning on Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves, forcing him to leave the game.

Initial X-rays were negative, but he walked back to the bench a few innings later with a bandage, indicating that he had been diagnosed with a contusion.

Mets manager Buck Showalter said that Alonso had a CT scan in Atlanta on Thursday before flying back to New York for further examination.

Even though it’s unlikely at this point, Showalter said he was hoped that Alonso would be able to play in Friday’s away game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Alonso remarked, “It’s clear he didn’t intend to [hit me].” Chuckie is a fine man, and the scenario didn’t call for it, so I wanted to set the record straight for anyone who might be wondering. Really, it’s that simple. A fastball that came in high and in from nowhere smacked me.

On Tuesday, after hitting his 22nd home run of the season, Alonso yelled at Braves pitcher Bryce Elder, “Throw it again, please, throw it again!”

Alonso was batting.231/.326/.546 with 49 runs batted in and 22 home runs, both league and league-high marks, prior to his injury. He recently hit two home runs and drove in three runs in eight at-bats.

Since June 2, the Mets have dropped six straight games, including all three of this week’s contests against the Braves. With a 30-32 record, New York is now third in the NL East.

Injuries plague the 2023 Mets. Alonso isn’t the only star player for the Mets to go down with an injury this year.

Edwin Dáz, a starting pitcher, tore his ACL at the World Baseball Classic this spring and will likely miss the entirety of the 2023 season. After spring training, pitcher Jose Quintana was shut down for three months due to a rib ailment.

Starting the season on the disabled list with a shoulder strain was ace Justin Verlander. Omar Narváez, the team’s catcher, had a left calf strain and was placed on the 60-day IL.

Pitcher Carlos Carrasco was out in April because of a bone spur in his right elbow, while reliever Brooks Raley was sidelined because of inflammation in his left elbow. Max Scherzer, a top pitcher, had to sit out in May due to neck spasms on top of a 10-game suspension.

The Mets’ already dismal season could be further hampered by the loss of their finest batter for an extended period of time, Peter Alonso.
