NBA Finals 2023: Nikola Jokic’s Thrilling Game 5 Victory Lifts The Nuggets To Their First NBA Title
The Denver Nuggets became NBA champions for the first time in the team’s history.
In front of a boisterous crowd at home on Monday, the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat 94-89 under the leadership of Finals MVP Nikola Jokic to win their first championship.
The Nuggets‘ victory over the Warriors could have been a better performance. The Nuggets shot 5-of-28 from outside the arc and 13-of-23 from the foul line in a rock-throwing contest of a game.
The Heat did a little better, making 9 of 34 shots from beyond the arc, but a 71-50 rebounding edge defeated them. Even the referees played rough, allowing a horrible call on a last-second 3-point effort by Jimmy Butler to stand.
Jokic, unsurprisingly, was Denver‘s savior. At the end of the contest, the two-time MVP had 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting, 16 rebounds, and four assists. A month or two ago, some people doubted that the best player in basketball since the playoffs started (and possibly for the previous three years) would end his season with a championship.
The procession is now all that remains.
