Despite losing star receiver Tyreek Hill early in the game and spraining his ankle in the second quarter, Mahomes still managed to throw for 378 yards and three touchdowns in week one’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In week two’s game against the Oakland Raiders, Mahomes threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the second quarter of the game.

After leading the Chiefs to a 4-0 start (10 passing touchdowns without any interceptions), Mahomes was also named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September for the second straight season. In week 7, Mahomes dislocated his patella against the Denver Broncos, but an MRI the next day showed no significant structural damage.

The Chiefs exercised the fifth year option for Mahomes’s contract on April 30, 2020, then on July 6, he went on to sign a ten-year extension worth $477 million plus another $26 million in future bonuses, for a total of $503 million.

The contract runs through the 2031 season and is the largest contract in American professional sports history ever, surpassing Mike Trout’s 12-year, $426.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Mahomes completed his fourth fourth-quarter comeback in week 2 as the Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs came back from a 9-17 deficit to win in overtime, 23-20. In week three’s victory over the Baltimore Ravens, he threw for 385 yards and made four touchdowns while also rushing for a fifth.  

It was the sixth time in NFL history that he had come back from a 10-point deficit to win. He set a record for the quickest time for a quarterback to reach 10,000 career yards in that game. It took him 34 games to eclipse Kurt Warner’s mark, which was not easy. 

He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week too. In week 8, he threw for 416 yards and five touchdowns in a 35–9 victory against the New York Jets. Mahomes was again named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Mahomes threw for 270 yards and also made two interceptions as the Chiefs lost Super Bowl LV to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 9-31.

He then became the youngest quarterback to start in three consecutive AFC Championship games. It was the first time since Mahomes took over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback that the offence failed to score a touchdown. In 2021, Mahomes will be in charge of the Chiefs’ offence. Mahomes renegotiated his contract on March 12, 2021, freeing up $17 million in salary cap room for the Chiefs.

Mahomes threw for three touchdowns, ran for another, and gained a total of 337 yards in week one’s 33-29 victory over the Cleveland Browns. He threw his first career interception in September during week two’s defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. Mahomes’ first September loss came in week 5 against the Buffalo Bills, a 36-35 defeat.

Despite the loss, Mahomes recorded career highs in rushing yards (61) and pass attempts (54). Only his second career loss by double digits, and first in the regular season, the Chiefs’ 3-27 defeat to the Tennessee Titans two weeks later was their worst of the season. Mahomes’ 360-yard, five-touchdown performance in the Chiefs’ 44-21 week one win over the Arizona Cardinals was his sixth game with five or more scores. In week 4, Mahomes threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns in a 41–31 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, earning his second AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors of the season. A Christian, Mahomes is one. His mother claims that he became religious during his time with the church youth group when he was in middle school.

For Mahomes, faith is very important. I always pray at the goalpost as I make my way around the pitch before a game. Simply said, I give God the glory for putting me in positions where I can praise Him. The greatest item on my prayer list is to bring glory to God no matter the outcome of my endeavours.

In his spare time, Mahomes enjoys a round of golf. He’s been playing in the American Century Championship since the year 2020, among other celebrity competitions, [215].Together with Josh Allen, he competed in the 2022 edition of The Match and lost to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

Endorsements

After his MVP season in 2018, Mahomes was offered a number of lucrative endorsement deals. After hearing about his ketchup obsession, Hunt’s offered him his first contract. He also became an advocate for brands like Oakley, Essentia Water, Hy-Vee, State Farm, DirectTV, Adidas, and Head & Shoulders.

He also inked a deal to be the face of Helzberg Diamonds’ new line of pendants bearing his name and likeness. He is the first player from the Chiefs to be on the cover of Madden NFL.

Two years later, for Madden NFL 22, he and Tom Brady would be featured on the cover once more. Only Mahomes and Brady have ever been featured on the cover twice. He inked an agreement with BioSteel Sports Drinks in 2020 to serve as their spokesman.

In addition, he joined the firm as an owner. As part of his endorsement arrangement with Adidas, he announced on August 16, 2021, that he will be releasing his own signature sneaker. The Mahomes 1 Impact FLX was introduced on August 23.

Mahomes starred in a 2022 Coors Light commercial. The commercial featured a Coors torch rather than beer since NFL regulations forbid players from advertising alcoholic beverages.

Philanthropy

Mahomes announced the creation of a charity called the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation in April 2019.[232] The organisation bills itself as being “committed to bettering the lives of children” on their website.[233]

Mahomes, along with teammate Tyrann Mathieu and several other NFL players, released a video after George Floyd was killed by police officer Derek Chauvin, calling on the league to condemn police brutality and violence against black people and to admit it was wrong to silence Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid for their protests during the playing of the National Anthem.

Mahomes and Mathieu launched a campaign to register new Kansas City voters. Community members were urged to sign up to vote in the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election. To get more Chiefs players registered to vote, he coordinated with the team. He got behind LeBron James’s effort to get more people registered to vote by joining Rock the Vote.[235]

In both 2020[236] and 2023, Mahomes ranked among Time magazine’s 100 most influential individuals.[237] Financial backing for companies

Mahomes became a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals in 2020.In 2021, he became a member of the Sporting Club, the company that owns Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer. Mahomes is an investor in the Miami Pickleball Club, a new professional pickleball squad. Naomi Osaka, Nick Kyrgios, and Rich Paul are all part of the ownership team. In 2023, Mahomes became a part-owner of the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League. His wife has been an owner of the team ever since it was founded.

A fan of the Whataburger fast food chain, Mahomes invested in a firm that was working to bring more locations to Missouri and Kansas in 2021. The primary locations will be in the Kansas City and Wichita, Kansas metropolitan areas, with additional sites situated in between.
