Pete Alonso Enters An Exclusive Group With His 40th Home Run Of 2023
The ‘Polar Bear’ had two home runs and four RBIs on Sunday as the New York Mets trounced the Seattle Mariners.
On Sunday, first baseman Pete Alonso of the New York Mets became the eighth MLB player to smash 40 or more home runs in three of their first five seasons.
Alonso, often called as the “Polar Bear,” is one of baseball’s most feared and great sluggers and just added (more) an incredible statistic to his burgeoning (great) Mets legend.
He follows in the footsteps of Hall of Famers Ralph Kiner, Eddie Mathews, Ryan Howard, and Albert Pujols, who accomplished the feat in four of their first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After Shohei Ohtani of the LA Angels and Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves, who are tied for the league lead with 44 home runs each, Alonso now has 41 for the (this) year, jumping him into third place.
Alonso said, “It’s a little disconcerting.” “Awesome names; I had no idea.”
Excellent form by Pete Alonso
Along with Darryl Strawberry, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright, Alonso became the fourth player in Mets history to have three seasons with 100 runs batted in (RBI).
Given that Alonso is only 28 years old and that Wright accomplished the feat with five different clubs, the record is easily within sight for the former Rookie of the Year.
“Through thick and thin (in every situation), we know one thing: Pete will walk through that door being the same guy every day (he reminded).”
“It’s a pleasure to be around. He never has a bad day. He cares about his teammates; he cares about the Mets. And to see guys like him succeed, it makes it even more enjoyable.”
Mets manager Buck Showalter said.
Alonso now has a 225 batting average for 2023, 100 RBIs, and 41 home runs, and he still has to play 33 games that can help him raise those meager totals.
Alonso added, “It seems like yesterday (to me) when I was (playing) in my rookie season.” “This is my fifth year (overall) and time flies. It means a lot (to me).” “This place has been extremely special to me. New York treats me incredibly well.”
