The Commanders have yet to indicate how they’ll decide whether to activate defensive end Chase Young’s contract option.

Based on head coach Ron Rivera’s most recent comments, the choice will be made after the team reports to start their offseason program.

Young had an ACL tear in 2021, and after a prolonged recovery that lasted far into the regular season, he only participated in three games the previous year.

On Tuesday, Rivera indicated that any discussions the organization has regarding Young’s future would consider his health and that how he looks in a few weeks will play a significant role in those negotiations.

“That’s the thing that will drive a big part of the conversation,”

Rivera said, courtesy of Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

“As we continue to work through this and talk about it, it will be about seeing and watching him.” Again, we get started on April 17, so we’ll continue to work through these things—talk to the doctors, trainers, and strength and medical—and get a feel for where he is. Then we’ll be able to decide and go from there.

Ron Rivera said.

A change in ownership, which would cost the organization $17.452 million, was also a consideration, according to Rivera’s prior statement, when deciding whether to exercise Young’s option.

The timing of that procedure is still unknown, though, and Young’s health will continue to be considered in all scenarios.
