Steve Kerr; Warriors HC, NBA History’s Highest-Paid Coach Now
A new contract that compensates Steve Kerr like the creator of a dynasty is undoubtedly in place.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr, has consented to a $35 million, two-year contract extension. He will become the highest-paid coach in NBA history as a result of the agreement.
Kerr’s pay for this season is $17.5 million, which is more than the salaries of all but five of the Warriors’ players.
Two years have passed since Kerr’s last NBA title, and he is in his tenth season as the Warriors’ head coach. Though the Warriors‘ core has lost some of its shine in the years that have passed, they are now 10th in the Western Conference with a 28-26 record.
Although Draymond Green hasn’t exactly been a reliable player this season, and Klay Thompson was just benched from the starting lineup, Stephen Curry has continued to appear like an elite player and the greatest shooter in NBA history.
The Warriors haven’t been able to sustain their dominance in the Western Conference by using players like Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga, who were meant to replace that trio as they grew older.
Are Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry getting ready for their farewell dance?
Obviously, the Warriors still believe that 58-year-old Steve Kerr can win them another championship, since they are willing to pay him accordingly. With Curry’s current contract expiring in two years and him and the coach becoming free agents in 2026, the two-year agreement also coincides with Curry’s contract expiration date.
Because of this, the Warriors’ next two seasons could prove to be crucial in terms of their ability to either return to their former glory or present a clear departure from it. While Thompson is a free agent this summer, Green’s contract extends up to that time as well, with a player option for 2026–2027.
Behind Monty Williams of the Detroit Pistons ($13.1 million), Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat ($15 million), and Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs ($16 million), Kerr was formerly the fourth-highest paid head coach in the NBA. One of the first contracts signed by an NBA coach, Williams’ has set the standard for the league’s top coaches.
As a head coach, Kerr has a 765-501 record, four championships, six Finals appearances, and the 2016 NBA Coach of the Year award. From his playing days, he also owns five rings.
