Taylor Heinicke Reportedly Start For Falcons Against Colts
Arthur Smith has now used Heinicke in replacement of Desmond Ridder a second time.
In Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Taylor Heinicke will start for the Atlanta Falcons once again, as The Athletic reports.
Arthur Smith, the head coach of the Falcons, is making the choice based on what would benefit the club moving forward as it fights for a postseason berth in the NFC South.
“That’s generally not a great scenario to have,” Smith commented. “It goes without saying that you should be impartial and fair while also giving folks a chance. It was a faith in him that endures regardless of circumstances. We have to act in this team’s best interest at this time, but it doesn’t imply that anyone’s career is gone.”
Sunday’s defeat to the Carolina Panthers was led by Desmond Ridder. The winning field goal for the Panthers was made possible by his interception in the red zone. Ridder’s six red-zone turnovers this season rank him sixth in the NFL.
Smith has changed roles from Ridder to Taylor Heinicke twice this season. Heinicke started the Falcons’ next two games after replacing Ridder at halftime in Week 8. Week 12 saw Ridder return to the starting lineup after they dropped both of those games.
When asked whether he will stay with Ridder after Sunday’s game, Smith responded, “There are a lot of things to consider; nothing is ever set in stone.” “You need to assess and adjust. We must succeed, and we must find a way.”
Although Ridder was supposed to start for the remainder of the season, Smith is now hopeful Heinicke can hold onto the position after division rivalries and the closeness of the playoff race.
