TE Reportedly Given Franchise Tag The Jaguars & Tight End Evan Engram Reaches an Extension Agreement
Three franchise tag players, including Engram, have yet to accept to contract extensions before Monday’s deadline because of this pact. The franchise tag will not be used for Evan Engram in the upcoming 2023 season.
The tight end has reportedly signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars worth $24 million guaranteed, as reported by ESPN. After Engram recorded 73 receptions for 766 yards in 2022, the Jaguars franchised him.
After starting his career with the New York Giants, Engram moved on to Jacksonville. After his rookie contract expired in 2021, he recorded 56 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns.
The Jaguars’ free-agent spending spree included signing Engram to a one-year contract with more than $8 million guaranteed for the 2022 season.
The Jaguars won the AFC South and advanced to the playoffs, where they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in a thrilling comeback victory in the first round before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round thanks in large part to the team’s improved receiving corps, which was reinforced by the signings of Engram and wide receiver Christian Kirk.
As of the Monday deadline, there are still three players on the franchise tag.
Engram’s franchise tender was worth $11.35 million in 2023 if the Jaguars hadn’t agreed to a multi-year contract with him.
The three-year pact will reduce Engram’s salary cap hit in 2023 and leave only three NFL players still on the tag who have not negotiated long-term agreements with their teams.
The last three players all play the position of running back.
Oakland Raiders Running Back Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants, Josh Jacobs of the Dallas Cowboys, and Tony Pollard, among others, have been tagged by their teams but have not reached an extension agreement with them before Monday’s deadline.
The deadline for a player and team to reach an extension agreement is Thursday, July 17.
Both Barkley and Jacobs remain far from agreeing to contract extensions with their respective teams, barring significant progress in negotiations.
On Friday, Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson claimed that without long-term extensions, both players were prepared to sit out portions of training camp.
If none of the three running backs sign new contracts by the 2023 season, they will compete for slightly over $10 million in that year.
After receiving the franchise tag, Engram becomes the third player to sign a contract extension.
Quarterback Lamar Jackson was franchise tagged by the Baltimore Ravens before signing a contract extension with $185 million in guarantees.
The Washington Commanders also tagged defensive tackle Daron Payne, who inked a four-year, almost $60 million guaranteed contract.
