The 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Not to Include Former Champion, John Daly

After a fan favorite’s early-week WD, the 2023 PGA Championship field will be devoid of a past champion.

Due to an injury, John Daly withdrew on Monday from the second men’s major of the year at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York, and Stephan Jaeger will take his place.

The 1991 PGA Championship was won by Big John at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, the first of his two major victories. Big John hasn’t qualified for the tournament since his T-18 result in 2012.

Daly has only scored one top-40 result and one round in the 60s in his five outings on the Champions tour so far this year.

About John Patrick Daly:

American professional golfer John Patrick Daly was born on April 28, 1966. He competes on the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. Daly is best known for his long drives off the tee, which have earned him the moniker “Long John,” as well as his non-country club demeanor, unusually long backswing, inconsistent play (which has included some outstanding performances and some contentious incidents), and personal life.

His “zero-to-hero” triumph at the 1991 PGA Championship and his victory in a playoff over Costantino Rocca at the 1995 Open Championship rank as his two finest on-course achievements.

Daly has won recognized professional competitions outside of the United States as well, including in South Africa, Swaziland (Eswatini), Scotland, Germany, South Korea, Turkey, and Canada.

Daly became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to average more than 300 yards per drive throughout an entire season in 1997, according to official performance figures collected since 1980. He repeated this feat every year from 1999 to 2008, and up until 2003, he was the only player to do so.

From 1991 until 2002, Daly also held the PGA Tour driving distance lead 11 times, with Davis Love III displacing him in 1994.

Daly received a two-year playing exemption after his latest PGA Tour triumph, which took place in San Diego in 2004. Daly’s career started to sputter after 2006, and he had problems getting cuts and staying on the circuit.

His former champion status and several sponsor invites were the main ways he obtained a PGA Tour tournament entry. Daly has participated in PGA Tour Champions competitions since 2016, winning the 2017 Insperity Invitational.

Since the Ryder Cup’s inception in 1927, Daly is the only player from either Europe or the United States to have won two major golf tournaments without being chosen for the team.

Daly has had a lot of business success. He has a business that designs golf courses and is supported by Loudmouth Golf Apparel. Daly has also produced two music CDs and written and recorded songs.
