When Scott Fitterer, the general manager of the Carolina Panthers, announced that he would look to the XFL to help fill up his team’s minicamp roster, he wasn’t joking.
The Panthers have invited St. Louis Battle hawks wide receiver Gary Jennings, as was revealed on Wednesday night. He joins fellow wide out Austin Proehl, tight end Jordan Thomas, offensive tackle Derrick Kelly, center Donovan West, and linebacker Ayinde Eley as the sixth XFL player to spark attention from Carolina.
Unsurprisingly, Fitterer, who was in charge of personnel when the Seattle Seahawks selected Jennings in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, is connected to Jennings. The only NFL game the 6-foot-1, 219-pound pass catcher has played in was against the Miami Dolphins later in the same season.
Jennings did stints with five other organizations before moving on to the XFL. He was chosen in the eighth round of their 2022 draft, along with the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs. Throughout eight games for the Battle hawks, he hauled in 11 receptions for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns.
