As a veteran team with a core that has won four NBA championships, the Warriors know what it takes to win a series.

Yet, they can also benefit from having content for bulletin boards. Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk emphasized that his team was younger after the Kings won Game 6 at Chase Center.

Golden State saw Monk’s comments as an insult and used them as inspiration for Game 7, even though he never declared the Warriors an old squad.

After the Warriors defeated the Kings 120-100 in Game 7 on Sunday at Golden 1 Center, Steph Curry spoke with the media.

“I think the competitive spirit is always in us and we didn’t need any sound bites to motivate us.”

“But it did help to know, you know, they thought they had something in the sense they faced it … But at the end of the day, we knew who we are, and these last 36 hours, we regrouped and tried to figure out what our adjustments are going to be and how we wanted to come out.

“There’s still nerves and anxiousness and anticipating a big night, but when we get out there, our experience took over. Felt pretty comfortable from the jump, so it was a great experience.”

Draymond Green took a different tack than Curry, who preferred to avoid mentioning Monk by name as the inspiration.

“Monk said we were old”

The Warriors are aware that they may use other motivational factors in addition to their experience.

Now that they’re up against LeBron James, Golden State must surpass their Northern California opponent. Tuesday will mark the start of Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series against the Los Angeles Lakers.
