Trevor Lawrence Will Make His Jaguars Debut Six Days After Ankle Sprain
In the game against the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars will not have to start their backup quarterback.
Less than a week after suffering a high ankle sprain that prevented him from playing in last week’s game, the Jaguars confirmed around ninety minutes prior to kickoff that quarterback Trevor Lawrence will start. Before making a final decision, the coaches and training staff had to assess quarterback Trevor Lawrence during warmups, according to prior reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
When Lawrence got to Cleveland Browns Stadium before kickoff, things were looking up. He seemed to be walking properly despite having a wrap or brace on his ankle.
In the fourth quarter of the Jags’ Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Lawrence departed the game. With the assistance of Jaguars staff members, Lawrence was hobbling around the locker room after the game, which ended in a 34-31 overtime loss.
A high ankle sprain can cause players to miss many weeks of play and seldom heals quickly. However, as the week progressed, Lawrence’s prognosis became increasingly accurate. By the end of the week, his ankle was just bandaged and he wasn’t even wearing a brace on it. Although the Jaguars were careful in their communication on his ailment, there was hope that it wouldn’t prevent him from playing.
Though his tenure as a starting quarterback may give you the impression that he does, Lawrence does not (that we are aware of) possess miraculous healing abilities. Lawrence has never missed a game because of an injury, according to Schefter.
Not in college, not in high school, nor as a professional. He demonstrated his ability to play and succeed in spite of injury two months ago in Week 7, leading the Jaguars to a victory over the New Orleans Saints only five days after suffering a knee injury.
Even though Lawrence’s practice time this week was severely restricted, Schefter stated that the Jaguars “have faith Lawrence is mentally and physically capable enough to prevail over the odds and make it quickly recover from his ankle injury.” But the Jags have backup C.J. Beathard ready to go in case something goes wrong during the game.
