According to sources, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero revealed on Sunday night that former Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Lions.

According to Pelissero, Gardner-Contract Johnson’s contains $6.5 million, fully guaranteed at signing. The group disclosed the signing on Monday.

Gardner-Johnson recorded a career-high six interceptions in his debut year in Philadelphia. The fourth-year safety, acquired from the Saints through trade before the 2022 campaign began, was essential in the Eagles’ defense as a ball hawk in the middle of the field and helped the group win its first playoff game since 2017.

Gardner-Johnson, ranked third among the top 101 free agents by Gregg Rosenthal, was a valuable asset to Philadelphia’s defense last season and will make an intriguing addition to the Lions. ‘In Week 12, the safety suffered a kidney injury that required him to miss the next five games, ending his season. He returned in Week 18, which helped the Eagles win the NFC’s top seed.

The Lions, who had a 9-8 record the previous season, are improving under head coach Dan Campbell, and Gardner-Johnson, 25, joins them. With Aidan Hutchinson, Malcolm Rodriguez, and the recently signed Cameron Sutton, Gardner-Johnson has helped Detroit’s defense trend upward.

Further defensive acquisitions could be made in Detroit since the Lions have two first-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft (numbers 6 and 18 overall).
