Roy Hodgson Resigns As Crystal Palace’s Manager
Roy Hodgson resigned from his position as manager of Crystal Palace, a struggling Premier League team, on Monday, just hours before a pivotal matchup with Everton, their division rivals.
After allegations that he was about to be fired, the club’s dismal performance put the experienced former England manager under strain. On Thursday, he became ill during a training session and was admitted to the hospital.
Six points above third-place Everton in the table, Palace is in 16th place in the league after losing 10 of their last 16 games.
“I have decided to step away so that the team can move on with their plans for a new manager, which were meant to be announced this summer. I recognize that, given the recent events, it may be appropriate for the club to prepare ahead at this time.”

Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy, Hodgson’s assistants, will be in control of the squad against Everton. The favorite to succeed Hodgson permanently is former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner, who guided the German team to Europa League success in 2022.
After a humiliating 4-1 loss at Brighton, Hodgson’s last game as Palace’s manager was a 3-1 home loss against Chelsea on February 12.
After leading the south London team from 2017 to 2021, the former manager of Liverpool and Inter Milan returned to Palace in March of last year for a second stint.
After Patrick Vieira resigned, he took over on a temporary basis, leading them to an 11th-place finish and out of relegation danger.
‘Special place in Palace history’
In his first season as manager in 2017–18, Roy Hodgson, who was signed by the club as a teenager and was born close to their Selhurst Park stadium, also prevented Palace from being relegated.
71 years and 198 days later, in the following season, he overtook Bobby Robson to become the oldest manager in Premier League history.

Fans criticized Hodgson’s stern style of play and how he handled star winger Michael Olise, who hobbled off against Brighton after 11 minutes after replacing him as a substitute. Hodgson’s otherwise successful reign came to an end this season.
Roy Hodgson deserves credit, according to Palace chairman Steve Parish, for keeping the team in the top division. He said, “This will always be remembered because Roy holds a unique place in Crystal Palace history.”
