Kansas City was the location of essentially all barbeque consumption. And maybe most significantly, 259 players now understand where their NFL careers will start.

The unexpected is the one thing about the NFL draft that you can count on. Some participants leave the game considerably sooner than anticipated. Some people linger in the green room like animals in the weirdest aquarium ever. There are also occasionally trades that come as a shock.

On Saturday, offensive tackle Nick Saldiveri of the New Orleans Saints was selected with the first pick in Round 4 after moving up, while defensive end Desjuan Johnson of the Los Angeles Rams was chosen with the 259th overall pick.

Even a kicker pick for Day 2 was made. Its like looking back now at the biggest startling revelations and jaw-droppers of 2023 as fans bask in the comforting glow of another successful draft.

They were chosen based on a variety of factors, including coming off the board much earlier (or later) than anticipated, defying precedent, and in at least one instance, adopting a good, old-fashioned terrible strategy.

Additionally, these were limited to one-time decisions rather than teams skipping a perceived position group for the entire draft.

The year 2023 was no different, with a “Big Four” quarterback who ended up being selected at home, the first running back selected in the top 10 since 2018, or a pair of defensive players that waited much longer than anticipated.

The Pittsburgh Steelers chose cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (No. 32) on Day 2 of the drafting, 24 years after selecting his father.

Three quarterbacks were chosen in the top four picks on Thursday’s first round.
