Browns Chose White: For the First Time in Almost 70-Year, Browns Show Their Alternate White Helmets

As part of their throwback uniform reveal on Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns used white helmets for the first time since 1951.

Browns fans can finally get their first glimpse at the new uniforms in Week 2’s “Monday Night Football” game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Week 6 against the 49ers and in Week 17 against the Jets, the helmets will make another appearance.

The white, traditional headgear has a metallic brown face mask and two dark brown stripes on either side of an orange stripe in the centre. Cleveland decided to give fans a sneak peek while giving the Cincinnati Bengals a small jab.

The new uniform, which has a whiteout shirt and pants, has received high accolades from the National Football League.
The Cleveland Browns, who entered the NFL in 1946, used white helmets for the first six seasons before adopting their now-iconic orange shell for the 1952 season.

Since this is the first time white helmets have been worn with all-white uniforms since 1946, a patch on the uniforms was designed to commemorate that year.

The Bengals, in a throwback gesture, drew attention to their longstanding rivalry with the Browns by posting a video that features both clubs’ iconic color schemes.

Mike Brown, son of Bengals co-founder Paul Brown, claimed in the film, “[Former Browns owner] Art Modell in Cleveland complained that we had ripped off the Cleveland Brown’s uniform.” My father’s response was, “Who stole who’s uniform?”

Last year was the first since the NFL reinstated its policy of allowing clubs to utilize non-standard helmets in up to three regular season games.

It appears that the modification may have inspired a few more throwback unveilings to come before the end of this offseason, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans may now look forward to a full “creamsicle” resurrection.
