Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo, Winner Will Get An Exclusive Belt
The World Boxing Council has had a unique belt made for them nine times in total.
Saul Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo, who are the undisputed middleweight (168 lbs) and super welterweight (154 lbs) champions, will face off on September 30 at the T-Mobile Arena to set up one of the most exciting fights of the year.
The World Boxing Council will award a unique edition of the belt to the winner of the fight, which will also feature a contest for the middleweight titles of the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization (WBO), and International Boxing Federation (IBF).
A piece of art from Mexico
The Puebla, Mexico, state-produced piece of art was unveiled in an exclusive presentation for “Noticias en la Manana” on Heraldo Television. As a nod to the state’s customary artisan culture, the belt has hand-made elements and finishes in Talavera and marble.
It took Puebla’s Angelica Moreno and Matilde Juarez, two outstanding craftsmen, almost two months to complete this exquisite sculpture. Inlaid on marble in the center of the belt are the words “World Champion” and the WBC initials, which are surrounded by flags from many nations, the month the fight took place, and the name of the Puebla state.
The belt, which weighs about 4 kilograms, has the customary cathedral of Puebla depicted on both sides. The cathedral was painstakingly painted in Talavera and decorated using the plumeado technique but now it is elegantly black rather than the traditional blue used in everyday artistry to highlight its elegance. Diamond-shaped decorations that represent diamonds were also hand-embroidered onto the belt.
The World Boxing Council has already created a belt with such unique features. This will be the ninth time the organization has given out a commemorative belt. For Canelo Alvarez and John Ryder‘s bout in May, it was last carried out.
