Canelo Alvarez Will Fight Another Mexican, Risking All, On May 4
In a fierce battle for their home nation, Canelo will face off against Jaime Munguia.
Canelo Alvarez never really had David Benavidez as an option. Benavidez chose to move on to another fight after becoming weary of waiting, despite Alvarez’s camp’s claims that an offer never materialized.
Alvarez was thus left with two choices about his prearranged fight date of May 4. According to all indications, Jermall Charlo was the clear front-runner and was almost certain to face the opponent. However, Jaime Munguia‘s late charge kept things in the balance.
The May Vegas match between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia
As of right now, Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN reports that Alvarez and Munguia are scheduled to fight.
Reports emerged at the end of last week indicating that negotiations had “intensified” between the camps of the two fighters. It’s obvious that the discussions went really well.
Munguia recently achieved one of his greatest triumphs when he defeated the formidable John Ryder via knockout. Ryder quickly decided to end his career in the sport. Munguia had stated that fighting Canelo, his fellow countryman, “would be an honor” following that battle.
For Munguia, this is the most significant bout of his career and probably always will be. Should he triumph over Canelo Alvarez, he would become the enormous celebrity that his talent has hinted at.
