Cole Custer claimed the pole position for the Xfinity Series race on the Chicago street track on Saturday.
After taking home his second consecutive pole win and fourth of the season, Custer told Kim Coon of NBC Sports that he was thrilled.
“It’s huge. We’re in Chicago. Buildings right there. When we got here, this was the coolest thing in NASCAR, and I don’t even know since when.”
“Our guys are clicking on all cylinders. This program is really running well right now. We just have to keep it rolling into the playoffs.”
Because he thought he might crash on a second lap, Cole Custer said he only completed one lap in the last round of qualifying.
On the 12-turn, 2.2-mile street track, Custer finished first with a lap time of 90.421 seconds (87.590 mph).
Sheldon Creed qualified second (87.573 mph); however, his vehicle was damaged when he hit the wall at Turn 8. He will have to start from the back to either switch to his backup vehicle or repair his primary car.
Austin Hill (86.597) and Connor Mosack (87.016) were the next two competitors to qualify, both ahead of John Hunter Nemechek (87.308).
The start of today’s race on USA Network is set for 5:21 p.m. ET. Dawson Cram, Dexter Bean, Joey Gase, Dexter Stacey, and Jeffrey Earnhardt were disqualified.
