Jessica Pegula Advances To Third Round Of US Open With An Impressive Win
When Tig hit a forehand low into the net after an hour and eleven minutes of play, Jessica sealed the victory.
Jessica Pegula, the third-seeded American, defeated Romania’s Patricia Maria Țig on Thursday with ease, winning 6-3, 6-1, to go to the third round of the US Open.
The two players swapped breaks early in the match, which had a tense beginning. Pegula, the top-ranked American player at the tournament this year, eventually pulled away by breaking Țig’s serve twice more.
She established a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set, which was more accessible for the 29-year-old. When Tig hit a forehand low into the net after an hour and eleven minutes of play, she sealed the victory.
Jessica Pegula stated after the game during her on-court interview, “It was awkward [in the first set]; we haven’t played each other. I’m sure we were both nervous.” “Playing at night, the conditions are different; it’s kind of cool tonight. It’s totally different than when I played here the other day. You just have to adjust and get used to it.”
In five of her previous seven grand slam competitions, Pegula has advanced to the quarterfinals, although she has yet to go further.
She will next play Elina Svitolina on Saturday at the US Open this year. The Ukrainian has seen a rapid ascent in the global rankings since she started playing tennis again earlier this year after giving birth to her kid. In July, she even made it to the Wimbledon semifinals.
Four weeks ago, Pegula defeated the other player in three sets at the Citi Open in Washington, DC, and now leads the all-time series 3-1.
About her upcoming opponent, Pegula stated, “Elina is so tough. I feel like every single match we play is always just a really good battle.” “I feel like we kind of play into each other’s game where we make each other play better, and we always just have really great matches. It’s great to see her back playing at such a high level so quickly.”
