Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers Need Not To Be a Dominant Force (Yet)

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers are in the midst of a physical series with the Brooklyn Nets as we await the outcome of the 2023 NBA MVP contest.
Given that Philadelphia is up 3-0 in the series and that Tyrese Maxey had a rough day in Game 1 and that James Harden was ejected from Game 3, one might expect Embiid to be having a monster series.

Instead, the most valuable player is scoring 13.1 points less per game than his regular season average, for a total of 20.0 on 46.2% shooting and 12.5% from deep.

Embiid kicked Nic Claxton in the groine with his leg up off the ground in the opening minutes of Game 3, and he was lucky to avoid a flagrant-2 foul and dismissal.

After finishing the regular season as the Sixers’ second-highest usage rate player (37.0 percent), it’s encouraging that Embiid hasn’t had to shoulder the offensive load just yet.

The best is yet to come from Embiid, who will have to face the formidable Boston Celtics in the second round.

Joel Hans Embiid

Born on March 16, 1994, Joel Hans Embiid is a Cameroonian, French, and American citizen who plays professional basketball for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Philadelphia 76ers chose him third overall in the 2014 NBA draught after he had played collegiate basketball for one season with the Kansas Jayhawks. He didn’t make his NBA debut until the 2016–17 season after suffering from foot and knee problems for each of the previous seasons.

Embiid has been named to the NBA All-Star team six times. He has also been chosen for the All-NBA team four times and the All-Defensive team three times.

He adopted the moniker “the Process” after hearing Philadelphia 76ers supporters chant “trust the process” during the Sam Hinkie era.

Embiid was the first centre and seven footer to lead the NBA in scoring since Shaquille O’Neal (2000), the first centre to average over 30 points per game since Moses Malone (1982), and the first foreign player to lead the NBA in scoring in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
