According to a statement from the team and himself, the venerable radio voice of the New York Yankees, John Sterling, will stop doing broadcasts effective immediately. April 20 at Yankee Stadium, the team will hold a ceremony to honor him.

The Athletic has reported that Sterling, who was the Yankees‘ announcer from 1989 until 2024, retired because of health concerns that started to affect the now 85-year-old analyst.

During his tenure, Sterling called 5,631 games for the New York Yankees. Among them is an amazing run of 5,060 games in a row, which demonstrates his passion and commitment to the game. Only in 2019 did health concerns compel him to take a little break, ending this run.

Due to his advanced age and health concerns, Sterling declared in 2022 that he would call fewer games when the Yankees were on the road in an effort to lighten his workload.

Anchoring the New York Yankees during their final dynasty from 1996 to 2000 and the Bronx Bombers’ final World Series victory in 2009, Sterling provided voiceover for the team.
