Leon Edwards Made Fun Of Covington’s Deceased Father In UFC Press Conference
At the UFC 296 news conference on Thursday, Leon Edwards was sent to the sidelines when rival Colby Covington made disparaging remarks about the late father of the champion.
In the main event of Saturday’s Las Vegas fight, Leon Edwards will defend his welterweight belt against Covington, who on Thursday (December 14) attempted to get under the British fighter who was born in Jamaica.
Covington declared, “I’m going to take you to a place you’ll never want to be on Saturday night.” You will be taken to the seventh level of hell by me. In the meanwhile, we’ll ask your dad, “What’s up?”
Security dragged Edwards back when he threw a water bottle at the American. Edwards’ father suffered a gunshot wound and died when the welterweight was just 13 years old.
In response to the question of whether Covington—who was dressed as George Washington and would see Donald Trump on Saturday—had personalized the situation, Edwards replied, “Not exactly.” “Make sure you maintain the same intensity backstage; the man is a piece of s***. Maintain that enthusiasm backstage.”
“Don’t forget to conserve your energy for the ring on Saturday night, b***h,” Covington countered.
After falling short against the Nigerian-American on points in 2015, Leon Edwards, 32, defeated Kamaru Usman to win the welterweight championship in August of 2022.
The championship, which Covington had previously lost, was then retained by Edwards after he defeated Usman in London in March. Usman stopped the 35-year-old American in 2019, and in 2021, he defeated him on points.
