Lions Defensive Back C.J. Gardner-Johnson Doing Well After Being Taken Away From Training Camp

C.J. Gardner-Johnson, one of the Detroit Lions’ big offseason acquisitions, has reportedly been injured at training camp.

Gardner-Johnson, according to various accounts, injured his right leg during light drills on Monday and had to be taken off the field when he couldn’t put any weight on it.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, it was a non-contact injury.

Gardner-Johnson, 26, agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Lions in March after helping the 2022 Philadelphia Eagles reach the Super Bowl (where they were defeated by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs).

He had six interceptions last season, which tied him for the NFL lead, and a five-game interception streak. That’s even more impressive given that he missed five games this season due to a lacerated kidney.

With defense being a significant concern, the Lions brought in Gardner-Johnson to help their newly overhauled secondary. This season, he was anticipated to be their top nickel back.

And he might still do it. Later that day, Pelissero noted that CJGJ’s injury may not be as terrible as it first appeared.

Later that day, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that MRIs on Gardner-Johnson’s knee revealed no structural damage and that he is “day-to-day.” If you listen closely, you can hear the entire state of Michigan breathe a sigh of relief.
