Megan Rapinoe Ends USWNT Career By Protesting National Anthem
Although she is also one of the most divisive in certain quarters, Megan Rapinoe is still one of the most well-known female soccer players of her time.
Throughout her remarkable career with the US Women’s National Team, Rapinoe has frequently teamed up with persons in positions of authority to fight against social injustice.
Some American demographic groups have been quite critical of Rapinoe since she is an openly gay woman and an outspoken opponent of Donald Trump, the 45th US President.
Rapinoe did as she had promised and objected to the national anthem in her final match with the USWNT, as she had previously.
Megan Rapinoe opted not to sing
Rapinoe stopped singing the national anthem following the turbulent 2016 election of Donald Trump as a part of her continuous protest against the inequity and unfairness in the nation.
Even though Rapinoe was the team’s captain for the final time during the match against South Africa on Sunday at Soldier Field, she declined to sing the national anthem.
After an international career that saw her represent the nation on 203 occasions, Rapinoe was accompanied by her family and fiancĂ© to receive a framed jersey. The game was intended to honor Rapinoe’s accomplishments in women’s football in America.
She contributed to Emily Sonnett‘s goal, replaced by a standing ovation, and then hugged her teammates.
It was not surprising that Rapinoe was well-liked that night given that the audience was likely to support her political views and decisions.
Even after the game, she had a chance to thank the spectators for their support during the match and the entirety of her international career.
“I know that I am a liked player, and I know that I mean a lot to the game, but to have this night come and to actually feel it and see it, from my teammates, from our staff and certainly from the fans, who have been such a huge part of our success on and off the field, really… it was very special.”
