Mike Woodson will earn a seven-figure increase over the next four years of his contract after leading his alma mater to consecutive NCAA tournament berths in his first two seasons on the job.
Mike Woodson will get an additional $1 million per year for his six-year contract, bringing his total compensation to a little over $3 million. The Big Ten men’s basketball coaches Tom Izzo (Michigan State) and Brad Underwood (Illinois) are paid more than Woodson, who will now get $4.2 million yearly, according to a news release announcing his rise.
Scott Dolson, the IU athletic director, said in the press release.
“Upon his arrival, Coach Woodson immediately re-inserted our program into the national conversation both in terms of an elevated level of success on the court and in recruiting.”
“I knew that returning our program to the level that Hoosier fans rightfully expect would be a process that wouldn’t happen overnight. I have been extremely pleased with the steps we have taken during the last two years.”
“I believe under Coach Woodson’s leadership, we have positioned the program to compete at the highest levels in recruiting, which in turn will enable us to compete at the highest levels within the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament.”
In his first two collegiate seasons, Woodson had a 44-26 record and a 2-2 in NCAA tournament action. The Hoosiers have a winning record in Big Ten play for the first time since 2016, with a 21-19 record in conference games over that time frame. They were 12-8 in the league last season.
Furthermore, Jalen Hood-Schifino (Los Angeles Lakers) and Trayce Jackson-Davis (Golden State Warriors) were both selected in this year’s NBA draft, marking the first time since 2017 that three Indiana players were selected in the same year.
With a slew of official visits scheduled for the following weeks, IU is presently aiming to leverage the recruiting momentum of that accomplishment into one of the top 2024 classes in the nation.
These guests will now visit the school to see a coach who is well-paid for his work.
